: East Singapore : :
For our purposes we refer to East Singapore as the areas in and
around Geylang Road, Joo Chiat and Changi Airport. The neighborhood
around Geylang Road is known for its nightlife and nocturnal activities
and all that entails while Joo Chiat is where everyday Singaporeans
live, work and play. If you are looking for the "real"
Singapore of today, Joo Chiat is where you will find it. There is
a predominately Malay character, markets, cafes and small shops
galore all going about their business very nicely - thank you very
much in a harmonious blend of cultures and religions that is quite
encouraging.
Well served by the bus system and MRT, hotels in this area are mid
size budget hotels catering to cost conscious travelers on a tight
budget. There are primarily two competing chains of budget hotels,
Fragrance Hotels and Hotel 81. Both offer rooms that are very tidy
however rooms are much smaller than average and facilities are limited
- i.e. no restaurant, business centre or swimming pool on the premises
etc.. But for students and travelers on a shoestring budget or transit
guests overnighting the value here can really stretch your travel
dollar.
So if you are going to be in Singapore for a short visit or prefer
to be off the beaten track check this area out - you may be pleasantly
surprised - Fragrance Hotels and Hotel 81 set the standard for how
a budget hotel should be run. FYI, in order to remain objective,
hotels are listed in alphabetical order. We don't favor any hotel
for any reason.
